Media Art Care is an initiative founded by Rea, bringing years of international experience in the field of media art care to Athens. Its mission is to raise awareness on matters regarding the acquisition, the presentation and the documentation of these dynamic artworks, while offering conservation and management services to museums, archives, collections and artists. Caring for artworks that incorporate audiovisual and/or born-digital elements, requires expertise across multiple fields, including conservation science, audiovisual technology and digital preservation.
Unlike traditional art forms like paintings, media artworks must be installed in order to “come to life” and be experienced by the public. The equipment used in these artworks can either be dedicated, holding aesthetic value as part of the piece, or discreet and replaceable, serving purely functional purposes. Because of their reliance on technology, these artworks face risks of technical obsolescence, making it essential for professionals to recognize, analyze and document their conceptual integrity. Compared to traditional art forms, technology-based artworks are more vulnerable to loss, misinterpretation, and improper installation because of their intricate relationship with time, space, and concept. Their care requires a blend of technical knowledge and a deep understanding of artistic intent and Media Art Care strives to bridge the gap between these two worlds.
